Looking forward to a future without the past...

I have my computer set to automatically apply the windows security update.  For the last several weeks Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB886903) has failed to install and is on a continuous loop of attempting.  I have tried to install it manually, cleaned out my temporary, looked for a corrupt install in add/remove programs, and read the Microsoft support article ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887219 ) which was linked on the support page.  I think I understand from that article that there was once a problem which has since been resolved in which the installation failed.  However, I still cannot install the update even manually.

I know that some Stardock applications make use of Microsoft .NET Framework and I am wondering if i have to unload things, or if it would hurt my applications to get a different version of Net Framework.

At the very least I would like to get my computer out of the loop it is in, constantly nagging me about the update and leaving an icon in my tray.

Thank you.

edited to add that subsequent updates have installed without a problem.

I had the same thing happen to me when downloading and installing that particular update (KB886903)...turned off my firewall for a second and all was good.

Lockups seem to be 'gone' [touch wood]...but auto update isn't working....manual downloads is the way to go at the moment....

Nope...still get the lockups...less frequently...

and still have a few more manual dls to get/install...as the auto-update still ain't doing it for me...

I still cant download that one, even manually.  I did try and delete the one I found in add and remove programs, but it told me it had been deleted.  I think the registry values to it may still be in there, though corrupted.  The registry cleaner wouldn't clean all of the values without registering it.  I just hid that one download.

Paul,
Here's the Registry entry I mentioned for the lockups in #19: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\BrowserHelper Objects

Export the entry to a temp and then delete the folders under that entry. If it works, fine. If not then import the saved file back.

For the update issue, here's something for your reading pleasure: Link

Diane,
Open the Windows directory and in Folder Options 'unhide folders'. Scroll to the file $NTuninstall886903 and delete it. Failing that, go to C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Updates\M886903 and uninstall from there.
